calmbirth® classes with Melanie Cane
Imagine a calm, joyful beginning to your baby’s life . . . . calmbirth® guides a mother, with support from her partner, to birth the baby comfortably, naturally and as happily as possible. Anxiety and fear are reduced by the application of simple relaxation and breathing techniques. calmbirth® also allows and encourages fathers to play an active role in their baby’s birth and to help lay the foundation for a peaceful birth experience. calmbirth® childbirth education classes can be taken by anyone; first-time parents, parents who have had unsatisfying or upsetting previous births, or parents who just want their birth to be a wonderfully calm experience. "Hi Melanie, I just wanted to thank you again for our wonderful Calmbirth class last month. We have been practicing the meditations and reading through the information and are feeling really positive about the whole experience. It came in handy last weekend at the hospital birthing class we attended which was very pro-intervention and did not really stress the choice that parents have. We were lucky we had the positivity and relaxation that Calmbirth brought to fall back on. If we didn't, I would be a ball of nerves right now! Thanks again, Sam :)" What will I learnTopics include:

Course Outcomes
This is a course that really improves the birth experience and the birth outcomes for both the mother and baby. Calmbirth not only includes making the birth processes safer and more comfortable, but also reduces the need for medical intervention. For instance, women who attend the calmbirth course have a 50% reduction in the need for a caesarean section as well as reductions in the need for any other medical interventions. This reduction in intervention has the further effect of increasing satisfaction with the birth experience, helping with baby bonding and it also reduces the chance of postnatal depression. Simply put, calmbirth helps both the mother and baby to get the very best out of their birth.
Research shows that women who are prepared for and supported in labour have...
· 50% reduction on caesarean rates
· 25% shorter labour
· 60% reduction in epidural requests
· 40% reduction in syntocinon use
· 30% reduction in analgesia use
· 40% reduction in forceps delivery
Also, an on-line survey is sent to each couple who has attended the Calmbirth® program after the birth of their baby. To date, there are over 4000 results from these surveys.
This survey has shown that out of the 4000 Calmbirth® mothers:
76.7% experienced a natural birth
15.4% emergency caesarean 4.8% planned caesarean
45.6% had no analgesia or anesthetic during their labour
29.5% used gas only.
20% reported that generally they would not describe the sensations they experienced during labour as painful
29% describing their pain as moderate.
74.6% were able to breastfeed soon after birthing

About the Facilitator
Melanie Cane is a Childbirth and Early Parenting Specialist. Her passion lies in educating and empowering couples to achieve the best possible birth and early parenting experience.
Melanie, through the journey of becoming a parent herself, realised that many women have lost the confidence to birth, and even mother their babies. Birth has become very reliant upon the medical model, and although our medical practitioners have a very important part to play in making sure we have a healthy mother and baby, it has made women unsure about their natural ability to birth. There is alot of fear around birth and bringing babies into our lives, and Melanie shares her extensive knowledge, so that parents can feel confident and educated about the choices they wish to make. Her confidence in women to birth and mother their babies beautifully is unwavering,
Her journey has taken her to qualify as a breastfeeding counsellor (1997), certified doula (2003), registered calmbirth® practitioner (2007) and a childbirth educator (2009) and during that time has become well respected and sought after.
In our current society, a mother's work tends to be undervalued and undersupported, and we have lost the sense of 'community', which is so important. Her philosophy is the better educated, supported and nurtured that parents are, they will feel more empowered and confident in this important role they have taken on... birthing and raising a whole new person to take their place in this world.
